Dick DeVos Has A Record Of Success

Dick DeVos is a successful businessman from Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is the son of Richard DeVos Sr. Richard DeVos Sr was the CEO of Amway. Amway was a distribution company that operated from 1993 to 2002. Dick Devos had a brief stint in politics. He ran for governor of Michigan as a Democratic candidate but lost to Jennifer Granholm. Richard DeVos Sr was listed as the 67th richest person in the United States by Forbes Magazine in 2012. Devos’s wife is Betsy DeVos. She is currently the United States Secretary of Education.


Dick DeVos attended School in the Forest Hills public system. He became involved in the family business at a very early age. The operation was ran out of the family’s home. Devos and his brother worked together to host conventions for their fathers Amway activities. The boys did all of the little things to make clients feel comfortable. These chores concluded cleaning dishes to driving clients around for recreational purposes. Over time their roles evolved into more sophisticated endeavors. Soon the boys were speaking in front of groups of people and giving presentations about the family’s company.


Dick DeVos went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at Northwood University. He briefly attended Harvard Business School, as well as the Wharton School’s Executive Study Program. Devos holds honorary doctorates from Central Michigan University, Grove City College and Northridge University.


Dick Devos started his career with Amway in 1974. He worked his way through several different positions within the company. Research and development, marketing, finance, sales and manufacturing were all areas where Dick DeVos performed well. By 1984 he had worked his way up to become Amway’s Vice President. The scope of DeVos’s responsibilities spanned across 18 different countries. The company opened several different markets while under Dick Devos’s leadership.


The DeVos family purchased the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association in 1991. Richard Devos Sr appointed himself CEO of the team. He divided ownership evenly among each of his children. Dick Devos eventually left the Orlando Magic and returned to Amway. By this point the company had expanded it’s business influence to over 50 countries and 6 different continents.


The Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation operates out of Grand Rapids Michigan. The organization has donated millions of dollars to several causes including religion, education, community and free-market of organizations, as well as artistic institutes. It sponsors Kids Hope USA, West Michigan Aviation Academy, Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital, Regional Air Alliance of West Michigan and Mars Hill Bible Church. The West Michigan Aviation Academy was opened in 2010. It is the first Aviation Charter School of its kind in the country.
